Healthcare Work Group

Implementing AIDC can be a challenge in any environment. Combine that with the regulatory requirements of the life sciences and healthcare industry, and the challenges may at times seem insurmountable.

The AIM North America Healthcare Work Group was formed to assist with the implementation of auto ID in these regulated environments. The committee is comprised of veterans of the industry, each with several decades of experience. Some of the committee members have been involved in the auto ID industry since its infancy; all are current practitioners in one aspect or the other.

The board released the Digital Supply Chain Whitepaper to assist organizations in understanding how AIDC technologies and standards are being used to ensure traceability for all lines of devices.

Working Groups

Today’s regulatory landscape and the need for better tracking and monitoring has created a dynamic environment where real change is imminent and inevitable. The need for more robust availability of data is similar for both medical devices and pharmaceuticals, but different enough that the AIM-NA Healthcare Committee has two distinct working groups focused on their respective areas of expertise:
  • UDI (Unique Device Identification)
    • Medical devices
    • Patient care, diagnostic, or treatment devices
  • SNI (Standardized Numeric Identification)
    • Prescription drugs
    • Pharmaceuticals
    • Biologics
    • Vaccines

Goals

  • Leading appropriate technology recommendations in both bar code and RFID to implement healthcare standards in North America
  • Accurately communicating
    • Lessons learned from past serialization efforts and industry best practices
    • Relationships of UDI, SNI and DoD IUID initiatives
    • AIDC technology (hardware, software) to support implementation
    • Return On Investment (ROI) from every perspective
  • Creating a forum for open discussion of industry and FDA adoption issues
    • LinkedIn UDI Group, with over 2000 members
