Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania | January 17, 2019 |AIM, the trusted worldwide industry association for the automatic identification industry, providing unbiased information, educational resources and standards for nearly half a century, has announced the release of a new sensor technical specification that will provide a universal method to interpret temperature threshold sensors used to enhance supply chain management and logistics in most industrial sectors.
The technical specification, Application Identifier (8009) with Sensor Descriptor Attribute 01 (Sensor AI (8009) 01), is the result of an exclusive collaboration between GS1 and AIM, launched in October 2017, to partner GS1's Application Identifier data encodation rules with sensor technical specifications developed by AIM. This allows reading and interpretation of the sensor and barcode using a single scan. "The desire was to develop a way to interpret sensors," said Ray Delnicki, Global Standards Director for GS1 US. "The first application is temperature threshold sensors, applied to vaccine vials dispensed in remote geographies, using a smart device scanning both the barcode and sensor on the label." AIM Member Mohannad Abdo, PhD, Senior Manager of Technology Innovations at Temptime Corporation, further shared the significance of the specification, "With the release of Sensor AI (8009) 01, the AIM-GS1 partnership has introduced a way in which digital business transactions, typically executed using barcodes or RFID (radio frequency Identification) will be able to easily capture, format and utilize dynamic data to enable greater integration between applications for AIDC (automatic identification and data capture) and the supply chain. Sensor AI (8009) 01 provides the cornerstone for optically readable sensors of any kind." An optically readable sensor indicator adds another dimension to an existing barcode format. With Sensor AI (8009) 01, the value of both barcode and RFID tags is significantly enhanced by incorporating dynamic (rather than static) environmental monitoring. It will also enable new applications for AIDC and support use in both Blockchain and Internet of Things programs. The release of Sensor AI (8009) 01 marks the first step in a process expected to yield additional specifications as the AIM-GS1 partnership continues work on detailed uses of this sensor technical specification. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania | November 14, 2018 | AIM, the trusted worldwide industry association for the automatic identification industry, providing unbiased information, educational resources and standards for nearly half a century, announced it is honoring industry pioneer Clive P. Hohberger, PhD with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
For more than 35 years, Dr. Hohberger has been a significant force in the development of automatic identification and data capture technology, particularly barcode and radio frequency identification (RFID), as a developer, collaborator, author and executive. His career spans nearly five decades representing organizations such as Abbott Laboratories, Blood Center of Wisconsin, United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) and Zebra Technologies, where he held senior executive positions in Corporate Development, Marketing and Technology Development. In 2009, he founded Clive Hohberger LLC and today serves as a consultant and Board Member to a number of global organizations. A past Chairman of the AIM, Inc. Board of Directors, Dr. Hohberger remains one of AIM's most active members, serving with several industry groups and workgroups as well as an Emeritus member of the AIM Board. In 2016, one of Dr. Hohberger's major contributions, the Ultracode International Symbology Standard, was released by AIM. Ultracode is a process innovation that enables the automatic capture of data by any digital color camera or smartphone. The process utilizes the first international standard 2D color barcode (Ultracode) which is printable by any RGB or CMYK process color, inkjet or toner technology. The code, together with advanced data compaction schemes and URLs encodes data in less than half the area of a QR code using the same modular size. It was honored with a 2017 Award for Innovationby the Label Industry Global Awards. In August 2018, the AIM Board announced the creation of the Clive Hohberger Technology Award as part of AIM's annual industry award program. Named to honor Dr. Hohberger's contributions, it will recognize scientists, engineers, software developers or systems integrators for outstanding contributions that have furthered the growth of the industry through important applications and new technological developments. The first award recipient will be named in 2019. "I can't think of anyone more deserving of this special recognition," said Dave Coons, Vice President of Software & Advanced Solutions for Zebra Technologies Corporation and fellow AIM Board member. "Clive truly built a lasting legacy within our industry and at Zebra, where his contributions continue to amplify our value proposition to customers every day. His selfless dedication to the advancement of standards and science within the AIDC industry have enabled enterprises to improve efficiency, reduce waste and save lives." The AIM NA Public Policy Healthcare UDI Work Group responded to the International Medical Device Regulators Forum's (IMDRF) call for consultation regarding their proposed UDI guidance documents. The group’s comments focused on the effective use of AIDC technologies in meeting the FDA’s requirements for direct marking of devices for unique device identification purposes. AIM has received several inquiries to get more information about the EU Frequency Regulation changes and what it means for AIM member companies. A recent interview with Jacques Hulshof, AIM|RAIN’s Regulatory Consultant and Josef Preishuber Pflügl, ETSI ERM TG34 Vice Chair, provided these answers:
Do you expect any Member State (MS) to reject the Commission ruling (RSCOM17-60rev3) "Draft Commission Implementing Decision on the harmonization of radio spectrum for use by short range devices within the 874-876 and 915-921 MHz frequency bands?" No they cannot but the EU mandate does not apply for non-EU CEPT countries (20 CEPT countries are not EU members). Some non-EU MS closely follow the EU. (CEPT – European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations) Can MS "opt-out" or maybe add country specific limitations? Yes, they can. EU MS will be encouraged by the EC to change to a 3-channel plan by February 2019 but not all EU MS will follow. Can MS delay their implementation? No, MS cannot delay the implementation of the Mandate after 01 February 2019. If MS accept the frequency bands mentioned in the Mandate, they have to implement these by 01 February 2019. Can companies sell compliant reader products within the RFID band 915-921 MHz in MS that haven't yet ratified the regulations (like Germany) before 01 February 2019? No. And even after 01 February 2019 it may not be possible to sell compliant reader products within the RFID band 915-921 MHz, because of Article 3 Item 2 RSCOM17-60rev3 below. Member States may take appropriate measures to protect existing use in the 874-876 MHz and 915-921 MHz spectrum to the extent necessary and where no alternative protective solution may be found through coordination of the various types of uses in those bands. This may include the imposition of additional technical, geographic or operational requirements for the use of the band while complying with the harmonised technical conditions for spectrum access set out in the Annex. EN 302 208 will be updated. The update will start on 18/19 September 2018 within the first meeting of ETSI ERM TG34 in Rosenheim, Germany. From a practical standpoint, it might make sense to implement all 4 channels now and have a software configuration that allows the selection of the supported channels after 01 February 2019, unless the extra effort is rather high. It should also be noted that the issue with Germany is not resolved. Germany very likely will not implement what the EC asks with the speed of other countries. What this means is unclear. It could be months, years or decades. An update may be expected after the summer break and when the official EC documents are circulated. We hope this information addresses some of the questions you are currently dealing with. While AIM does not have an official list of who passed the vote, who voted negative and who abstained, we are working to get that information along with a copy of the official documents, and will share with the membership as soon as we obtain it.
